KD0TLS: APRS activity expands in rural western MN

 Ever since KC0CAP-1 switched from a digipeater to a gateway/digi, western MN has seen an expansion of APRS activity in the area. Located in Litchfield, KC0CAP-1 added gateway service back in the fall of 2024. At that time, I wrote a post about the impact this change was having on the Minnesota APRS network by tying together various infrastructure. The importance of St. Cloud as a regional hub for the state-wide network increased dramatically due to the presence of this new TX gateway to the south. If anything, that hub's stature has only grown. And with the demise of the big W0YC-5 gateway/digi, the metro network has struggled to connect with the St. Cloud hub through any local gateway. 

 Over the past few months, it's become clearer that operators in western MN have realized the opportunities that have opened up with this expanded (and very reliable) APRS coverage. Activity has increased around and to the north of Willmar. 

 For those unfamiliar with the landscape, here is a map of the current infrastructure (click to enlarge):

 With the big K0VSC-1 TX gateway connecting to i-Gates in Paynesville (NY0I-1), Litchfield (KC0CAP-1), and Saint Augusta (N0ANC-2), traffic from places like Alexandria, Detroit Lakes, Long Prairie, and Little Falls now easily reaches into western MN. 

 But any further expansion to the west seems to be stalled. There have been attempts to establish a digipeater in Willmar, but these proved short-lived. Sauk Centre has been discussed as the location for a new digipeater among "enthusiastic individuals" for about a year now, but that hasn't come to fruition. Willmar itself has enough local traffic to justify having its own gateway outright. And Sauk Centre is the edge of K0VSC-1's reliable direct coverage, so a digipeater there would reach into previously-uncovered territory while having a solid path to K0VSC-1 as a gateway. And both of these expansion options would create the possibility of new small-scale i-Gates and digipeaters nearby to make coverage more robust. Yet, this expansion is stalled.

 We can see hints of the new activity around and to the north of Willmar by looking at coverage maps from the Paynesville, St. Cloud, and Litchfield gateways -- though actual activity is probably greater than these maps show. Bear in mind that the area being looked at is on the fringe of all three gateways, too.

 First, let's look at K0VSC-1's coverage of western MN:

 Here we see a view from the north-east of what is most likely mobile traffic all the way out to Lake Minnewaska. If a mobile station can reach K0VSC-1 from Lake Minnewaska, then a home station (or a digipeater) should also be able to reach the big St. Cloud gateway, as well. We also see scattered activity to the north of Paynesville along MN 4, which is an area that NY0I-1 likely directly covers. K0VSC-1 seems incapable of reaching Willmar.

 A clearer picture comes from examining the coverage of KC0CAP-1, with a specific focus on the area between Willmar and I-94:

 In this case, we view the area in question from the east rather than the north-east. The arrow indicates a concentration of activity around Willmar, and hints at mobile activity north along US 71 toward I-94. This is yet another fairly compelling reason to add a digipeater around Sauk Centre. Some may look at this map and conclude that KC0CAP-1 is doing a fine job of covering Willmar and the surrounding area, but we don't see the activity that isn't being gated, do we? Also, KC0CAP-1 isn't showing any of the activity out to Lake Minnewaska that K0VSC-1's coverage showed. And K0VSC-1 isn't detecting any of the activity around Willmar.

 Of course, we also need to look at the activity detected by the Paynesville NY0I-1 gateway:

 The data from the Paynesville gateway shows even stronger activity around Willmar, and north of there up to MN 55. It also confirms the activity that K0VSC-1 detected along US 71 between 1-94 and MN 55, and the activity along MN 4 between Paynesville and I-94. But it shows none of the activity out to Lake Minnewaska that K0VSC-1 detected. 

 Summary 

 With APRS activity increasing in rural western MN, new infrastructure is clearly justified. These rural areas have a very low noise floor, so packets that would be lost in the metro could be digipeated or gated easily with an equivalent station in western Minnesota. Packet collisions are not a factor, either. So, while the population is lower and more scattered, you get more "bang for your buck" in terms of coverage area with rural network infrastructure. Motorists also travel through these areas. APRS can provide these operators with local information (through services like MPAD), local weather, SMS and IRC, repeater information, and generally present a ham-friendly vibe to complete strangers. Another potential benefit that is often overlooked is providing VHF propagation data.

 The data just presented shows a need for a digipeater in Sauk Centre. A TX gateway could work, but a digipeater would allow access to the big K0VSC-1 TX gateway, plus local TX gateways in Long Prairie and near Big Swan Lake. In addition, it seems likely that a decent digi in Sauk Centre could reach the Paynesville i-Gate. This would open up the areas south of I-94 to the current network, and promote further growth in activity. 

 It might be a stretch, but I think that a home station near Lake Minnewaska, operating as a TX gateway, would serve a useful purpose. The EmComm value alone for Pope County would justify such an expansion. Especially for weather events, the ability to connect to 1/4 of the state through the K0VSC-1 TX gateway, and also the ability to issue advisories to both motorists and local operators over RF, such an expansion could be more effective than adding an FM voice repeater. 

 As I've said for years now, a home station TX gateway/digi in or near Willmar is badly needed. Such an expansion would offer an alternate path to gateway for the Granite Falls (NY0I-2) digipeater, but it would also move direct coverage westward. We already have proof that Willmar is within the range of both the Litchfield and Paynesville gateways, and we see that local activity is sufficiently strong enough to justify a gateway. With the Granite Falls digi also showing increased activity around Montevideo, the need for a more robust and redundant gating capacity in the area is more than obvious. 

 While the St. Cloud area has emerged as a regional hub, these hubs are generally only as effective as the peripheral stations that feed them. 

 As APRS activity continues to move westward, the network should compensate.
