Loose Notes 9/26/15

   Just a few items related to what's been going on over the past week. 
  • China has put four amateur satellites with SSB/CW transponders into orbit. Pass predictions for the XW-2A, XW-2B, XW-2E, and XW-2F can be found here. Locally, it looks as if the best we can expect are 11-minute passes. XW-2A has good passes in the early morning and roughly around 9 PM. XW-2E has passes somewhere around 8 AM and 7 PM. Really, there's not a big variation between the best passes of all four birds locally. They all tend to fall within an hour or two of each other. For each of the four, there are about six passes each day, but only two are high enough to even consider working. Remember, these aren't FM satellites and you will need a VHF/UHF rig capable of doing SSB/CW/digital to use them. For some reason, they only have an expected life of one year

  •  The FM satellite Fox 1-A will be launched in less than two weeks (Oct. 8). Still no word on when the FM EO-80 will be turned on. In a few more months, two additional FM sats will launch (Fox 1-C and 1-D). There's still time to pick up that "eggbeater" antenna or Arrow/Elk portable beam. 

  • Last Sunday, I had one of those nifty tropo adventures. With just a mag-mount whip on my balcony (and 50W), I reached the Red Wing 147.300- (no PL) repeater around 9 PM for a chat with KC5SAM (Virginia) and KD0LYL (Art). Virginia even graciously sent me a QSL card. 

  • I'm not sure if it's tropo ducting or some improvement on the repeater, but this week I've been able to bring up the UHF Hugo 443.050+ (118.8 PL) easily with S8 or S9 using my whip. Just last month, I needed a six-element Yagi (carefully aimed) for a chat with N0SBU (George).  EDIT: In a brief QSO with George on the new 147.315 repeater, I learned that nothing has changed on his .050 machine. I also am now unable to bring it up. Must have been tropo. 

  • For the past two nights, I've been able to bring up the 147.240+ (146.2 PL) machine in Ogilvie, as well as the 145.230- (146.2 PL) repeater in Duxbury. Though there's a repeater in Mankato on 147.240 + with a 136.5 PL, I can't get into it usually. Still, I can hear the Mankato machine while I'm on the Ogilvie repeater. Both are around 60+ miles away in opposite directions from me. The Duxbury repeater is on the same pair as N0BVE's WIRES-X hub (which uses a 114.8 PL), so it's hard to tell which repeater any traffic is on. 

  • Just today I was finally able to bring up the new 147.315+ (91.5 PL) repeater in North Branch. It boasts a 40 mile coverage radius, and that would put me on the fringe here in Plymouth. Yet, I "ker-chunked" it for an S3 return using my exterior mag-mount whip. The .315 also has an APRS object that notes it's part of the MAGIC network. EDIT: Per N0SBU (George), I was not getting in readably with 50W into the whip.

  • This week, I ran into KE0CRW (Greg) on the Maple Plain 147.000 repeater. He had just got a full-powered FT-7900 for his base rig, and we decided to test it out. Unfortunately, tropo ducting was non-existent that evening and we could only reach local repeaters. Since meeting Greg back in February (when he just got his licence), he's moved up from an HT with a duck, to an HT with a ground-plane, and now to a 'real' FM station. 

  • After an antenna failure last weekend, N0BVE (Don) has set up a brand-new eight-bay commercial antenna on the site for the 145.450- (no PL) repeater in Minnetonka this week. If you've had trouble reaching the VHF side of the HandiHam network previously, try it now with this new antenna. I've noticed that I get in better with my 10W mobile now, and the .450 is now absolutely full-scale at home here in Plymouth. 

  • A few more local repeaters now have APRS objects, joining the 442.075 and 147.090 on the map. Over the past few weeks, MARA's 146.850 object has disappeared. The .075 and .090 are RF beacons, however, while the four new additions are internet-based. Those repeaters would be the 443.575+ (114.8 PL) in NE Minneapolis, the 444.050+ (114.8 PL) in St. Paul, the 443.050+ (118.8 PL) in Hugo, and the 145.170- (100.0 PL) machine in St. Paul. All of these are associated with the MAGIC repeater network. N0GOI (Terry) has a master plan to link all of these repeaters at some point.

  • Speaking of APRS, there's a new I-Gate that just appeared a day or so ago near Wyoming. N0DZQ claims a range of only 3 miles, but it's very near 35W and should prove very useful for mobile stations. Other than that, we've neither gained nor lost anything in the network this week.  EDIT: Today, the N0DZQ gateway has moved south several miles. I'm currently trying to contact N0DZQ (John) to clarify things.

  • For the time being anyway, the same WIRES-X hub found on N0BVE's (Don) 145.230- repeater is also available on the KA0KMJ (John) 444.450+ repeater in Dayton. This hub links well over a dozen repeaters in scattered parts of the country (and England) together. The 444.450 has very good coverage to the north, while the 145.230 is in Chaska. This means that a whole lot more of the metro's operators now have access to the biggest of the WIRES-X linked networks, and the relatively high level of activity found there. 

  • Per on on-air conversation with KE0NA (Dave) this morning, I learned that he now has one of the new TYT MD-380 DMR hand-held radios. We tested it out on the "Local 2" talk-group, and it sounded pretty good. Dave is currently working on a code-plug for the radio, which should make the MD-380 even more attractive for anyone thinking about trying out DMR. The $165 monoband would just need Dave's code-plug loaded (much like you would load a programming file of repeaters into any other other HT) to immediately access the international network and local channels.  

A few tips for working tropo ducts

  Over the past week I've had a few adventures with tropo conditions. Unlike HF, which is mainly influenced by solar activity, VHF and UHF are subject to atmospheric conditions that are unrelated to the Earth's magnetic field. Layers of air at different temperatures can trap two-metre signals in a "duct" and channel them to relatively distant locations. This means that conditions can dramatically change from day to day -- even hour to hour -- and these ducts aren't evenly distributed. Conditions can be very good to the north-west, for example, while remaining normal to the north. 

  One of the best ways to track conditions in real-time is using the VHF propagation map. This is a clever interface that uses the APRS network as virtual propagation beacons, and it's one of the reasons why setting up a receive-only gateway is beneficial to the amateur community beyond those using APRS. A few things must be considered when using the map, however. 
  • All APRS gateways and digipeaters are not created equal. Some are on high towers running 50W, while others are on homes running a dozen watts. Others only receive. 
  • APRS gateways and digipeaters are not evenly distributed. Propagation might very well reach a certain area, but there is nothing connected to the network there to indicate that. 
  • APRS uses FM digital packet, and packet generally has a reduced range when compared to FM voice, and even more so when compared to SSB voice or CW. 
  • Even though APRS operates on 2M, UHF conditions mostly move hand-in-hand with VHF conditions. 
  Having said that, the map is your best "first look" at propagation conditions. I like to connect a radio to the antenna that I'm going to be using for FM voice (or SSB/CW) and directly look at the flow of data received to tell me which stations are actually getting to my location. Pay particular attention to the paths, as your FM voice signal will not be passing through a digipeater. For my particular purposes, I look at the signals received by the K0YTH-13 digipeater in Robbinsdale and notice who is hearing that machine. K0YTH-13 isn't on a very high tower and doesn't run high power, so it emulates my situation fairly well. 

  Alternately, if you have no ability to receive APRS packets, you could look at the data for the individual machine on the aprs.fi site. For example, K0YTH-13 is found here. You can look at the section marked "Stations which heard K0YTH-13 directly on radio" and see all of that information. Click on the header marked "last heard" (twice) so that the data is organised from most recent to least recent. You can then look at the "TX/RX" column to see the most distant stations hearing the digipeater. The same thing can be done with the section marked "Stations heard directly by K0YTH-13" to give you a fuller understanding of the situation. By looking at the stations directly heard, you avoid being confused by packets relayed by digipeaters outside of the machine's range. 

  For whatever machine you want to examine the data for, locate it on the aprs.fi map. Then left-click on the object. Next, click on "info" in the upper right area of the box that pops up. You will be taken to the page for that machine. Also, you'll find the link to view the raw packets of that machine at the very top of the page. Choosing "Decoded" on the drop-down menu towards the top of the page can help make understanding raw packet data easier.

  If you actually set up an APRS beacon using your antenna and radio at the power levels you intend to use for tropo exploration, you can use this same method to view the gateways and digipeaters that hear you. Just be considerate and remember that you are using a shared simplex channel. You don't need to beacon every ten minutes, and you don't need hours of data to get an idea of which areas are ducting to your location. One or two "shots" should give you the general picture as far as which direction offers the best prospects. Otherwise, a simple RX-only gateway using an analogue scanner, BaoFeng, or Raspberry Pi (RPi) board and your home internet connection is a superior alternative for getting real-time propagation information at your location -- and it provides a community service, too.

  For the propagation map itself, the "Find" box at the lower left is your good friend. Enter the callsign of a local gateway, such as W0YC-5 or N0AGI, to view the coverage area of that machine. 

  Tropo propagation is almost always best in the early morning and late evening. Distant repeaters that come in full-scale will fade away to nothing as the morning moves on, and machines that you couldn't possibly even "ker-chunk" at 5 PM will open up at 9 PM. You may be able to reach Brainerd clearly, though Faribault is out of reach. Red Wing could be worked easily, while Owatonna might just as well be on another planet. Wisconsin repeaters such as the 147.195+ (110.9 PL) in Balsam Lake or the 145.250+ (110.9 PL) linked machine in Baldwin, might be trivially easy to reach. At the same time, Willmar, Mankato, and Hampton won't "ker-chunk". The next day, it could be the complete opposite situation. 

  The propagation patterns for FM will be the same for SSB, CW, and packet. Likewise, if you are doing FM simplex. Just bear in mind that there may not be someone on the other end, even though you are reaching a particular area. Also, repeaters are often better situated than individual operators' stations. Still, if you are looking for an area to concentrate on for say, FM simplex, your odds improve dramatically if you can reach a repeater in that area. 

  While it's definitely in the "long shot" category, someone with a mid-power 10W or 25W rig and a decent exterior ground-plane could have some fun with FM simplex when ducting opens up. A hand-held Yagi or portable satellite antenna connected to a 10W HT or cheap 25W QYT KT8900 rig would improve your odds and open up repeaters that you could never hope to reach otherwise. Tropo ducting can serve as a kind of equaliser for those with rigs that some "elite" operators would normally look upon with disdain. 

  The down-side of tropo ducting is that you'll often find that people are unwilling to engage in conversation. The time spent talking to you is time that could be spent reaching even more distant stations. Also, reaching "dead" rural repeaters might be fun in principle, but nothing about tropo ducting compels people to actually be on those repeaters. It's entirely possible that they are trying to reach the metro while you are trying to reach their local repeater. The guy with an HT on a local repeater could end up snagging more distant contacts than you, because the distant stations would be coming here rather than waiting for you to come to them

  No matter how you look at it, tropo ducting offers excitement for everyone.

Another mid-power dual-band mobile

  As I was looking through AliExpress, I came across the HYS M10W dual-band mobile. This is another very small 10W transceiver with all of the standard features we've all come to associate with radios such as the Leixen VV-898 and the QYT KT-8900. The only thing that jumped out at me was that the receiver was dual-conversion and had reasonable sensitivity (0.2 uV). AliExpress had it posted for $112 with free shipping (no programming cable included).  

  Knowing that HYS is mostly famous for making cheaper knock-offs of cheap radios, it didn't take much of a search to find the Baojie BJ-218 on 409shop for only $95. The microphone and speaker grille is slightly different than the HYS counterpart, but everything else is the same. 

  Like the Leixen VV-898 (and its variants), the M10W (or BJ-218) is knob-less and can mostly be operated through the microphone. 

  Of course, radios like these produce snickers and smug derision from the "elite" in the hobby. Not everyone needs 50-75W output, especially in urban areas. Even here in Plymouth, my 10W Leixen VV-898 reaches quite a few repeaters just fine. Those far-flung repeaters that it can't reach don't much matter to me. I used my Leixen at home with both indoor and outdoor antennae, and it did an adequate job. If I lived closer to the urban core, it would have done even better. Not everyone wants to spend hundreds on this hobby, either, especially in the early stages. 

  One of the more constructive ways to encourage hams to upgrade their rigs would be to abandon this pointless obsession over the radio that someone is talking on, rather than what they are saying on it. This perpetual "rig-shaming" turns off more new hams than anything else. Rather than encouraging them to spend more money, it just discourages them from getting on the air and suffer the brow-beating and smug humiliation that so many operators 'helpfully' dish out. And, if they aren't getting on the air as much, the case for an expensive radio becomes dramatically less compelling. 

  It seems ironic, but most of what hams do to 'promote' the hobby is really counter-productive to the goal of bringing new people in and having them stick around. Eliminating the 'rig-shaming' would create an environment that would make people want to communicate further and more clearly. Spending more money to reach people that treat you like trash is not attractive.  

  Much to the chagrin of the Old Guard, there really is a place in the hobby for these radios. Nobody is asking you to buy them. You aren't the target market. You should also consider that several countries have an entry licence Class that limits operators to 10W, and these people might very well not have a lot of money. 

  The trend of mid-power FM transceivers seems to be continuing, despite the jeers of the Wise Elders. And people are still buying Chinese HTs. I guess that The Great BaoFeng Hysteria flopped. It's a bit pathetic that nothing whatsoever was learned from this failure.      

New Numbers, Upgrade Fever

  The latest amateur licence numbers have been out for a bit, and I thought that it might be worthwhile to look at them.

   As you can see, we reached a new record for amateur radio licences held. If you look a bit closer, however, you'll see that it was a bit of struggle to reach this new peak. The actual number of licences actually declined a few times (month-to-month) over the year so far. August's record was achieved by adding a feeble 156 new licences, and only a bit over 2600 licences have been gained so far this year. 

  Meanwhile, the number of Technician Class licences is struggling even more. So far in 2015, only a net of 1192 licences have been added. Again, we've seen month-to-month drops in the number of Techs out there, and April is starting to look like a ceiling. 

  How can we have added 2600+ new licences while adding only about 1200 Techs? The answer, I would suppose, is upgrades. More than 1900 General Class licences were added, and a the number of Extra Class licences increased similarly. 

  What we appear to be seeing is that the hobby is struggling to draw enough new blood to replace the number of Technicians upgrading to higher licence Classes. The small decrease in Generals bolsters this interpretation, as Generals upgrade to Extra and a slightly smaller number of Techs upgrade to General Class. 

  Still, we added more than 2600 to the total over the year so far.  Yeah, but that's not that great by comparison. 

  In 2014, we had increased the total by about 6400 at this point in the year. In 2013, we'd gained more than 4500 by August. And in 2012, more than 4600 had been added to the total by this time of the year. For 2011, about 3400 new licences had been gained. Going back to 2010, we had actually gained 10,600+ by August. And, 2009 saw 11,500+ new licences at this point. 

  So, while amateur radio is still gaining in total licences, this has been a pretty sluggish year for growth. Instead, we're seeing much more lateral movement as those new hams of years past are now upgrading to General and even Extra. 

  We still aren't seeing much impact from licence expirations, because the term is so long and people shift between Classes. But the loss of more than 1800 Advanced Class licences so far this year is a sobering indicator. Nobody has been able to get an Advanced licence since 2000, yet they still can be renewed. The fact that they aren't being renewed indicates pretty strongly that those people have died or become vegetative. It's not much of a leap to consider that those who hold General Class licences also die or become incapacitated. Those numbers are simply concealed by upgrades. 2016 is set to have over 18,000 licences expire, compared to only 15,000 in 2015. 

  Even having reached a new record, it's becoming clearer every month that the period of big growth is drawing to a close. 

  Minnesota

  That big growth has not been evenly distributed across the country, either. A look at Minnesota's licence numbers can provide a bit of perspective. While we have done fairly well compared to a few other States, it's starting to look as if we've peaked. The latest numbers go back to June, when the national numbers essentially held steady. 

  Over the past two years (6/15 to 6/13) we've lost over 50 licences from the total. The number of Technician Class licences has actually declined by about 60, while the number of General Class licences has risen by about that same amount. We've gained about a hundred Extra Class licences over the past two years, as well. 

  Over the past five years, as we saw the national numbers show huge increases, Minnesota only gained a bit more than 140 in total licences. That's not very impressive for the entire state over five years. Losing 120 Advanced Class licences over the past five years is, again, an indicator that a significant number of Minnesota's licensed amateur population could very well be residing in cemeteries.

  This is a common pattern, even in States with declining numbers. Movement is toward a top-heavy licence Class population, while Technician numbers stagnate or drop. Minnesota has a slightly lower percentage of Techs (47% of total state licences) than the national level of 49%. 

  Some, of course, would applaud this. I've long thought that a whole lot of local operators would be much happier with a much smaller, but higher-classed, amateur population. The sense of elitism is relatively strong here, and many barely conceal their low opinion of Technicians, seeing their value entirely and exclusively as that of future Generals or Extras. 

  I see the steady decline in the number of Minnesota Technicians as an indication that we are, effectively, eating our seed corn. It's blatantly obvious that we are no longer drawing enough new people into the hobby to replace those that move up. It's also becoming increasingly clear that expirations will blunt future growth on paper. We've lost more than 60 Technician licences in the past year alone here in Minnesota. And this is during a period when the national Tech population grew by almost 2900. 

  Across the country, people are noticing the phenomenon of the "inactive Tech". These are people that got their licences and abandoned the hobby relatively quickly. I've welcomed several new Technicians over the past couple of years, only to hear stories of disillusionment and alienation. After a few months, I simply don't hear them throw out their signs any more. 

  There is a limited number of people with even a vague interest in two-radio of any sort in this day and age. 1985 was thirty years ago, and the things that drew people into the hobby back then are irrelevant now. Nobody getting into the hobby now is interested in a role-playing experience where we all pretend that the clock has been turned back. Pointing at the national numbers has been a pleasant (if misguided) past-time of the local elite for some time now, even as the state-wide numbers told a less sanguine tale. Even those national numbers, however, are now showing signs of weakness. 

  Over the past few years, the reaction to my warnings over the hobby's future has changed. It used to consist of chuckling, grinning stooges pointing at the (national) numbers and telling me that everything is wonderful. More and more now, though, it's angry jackasses accusing me of 'heresy' and demanding "solutions" -- although they reject most solutions. The answer is not to "train" new hams to fit into a world gone by. Instead, it's to convince the older hams that the world really has changed, and their snarling that new hams "just don't get it" is highly counter-productive. None of this "disconnect" has any basis in technical knowledge. It's a complete social failure to integrate new hams into the community. It's attitudes, habits, "traditions", and delusions. You don't "fix" people with a schematic. You fix them by showing them the consequences of their irrational and irrelevant thinking. We can't do this, though, because we've convinced ourselves that "everybody is a good guy". 

  Even as the Minnesota amateur population becomes more and more 'educated', disillusionment increases and on-air activity decreases. Maybe it never was a "technical issue", old guys. Maybe it's you trying to shape new hams into the image of your deceased buddies, without any regard for what those new hams wanted out of the hobby.

A Positive Mentoring Experience

   I wanted to write something a bit more positive, so I thought back to an on-air experience that I had a couple of months ago with KA0PQW (Matt). At the time, it seemed like nothing special. But the more that I thought about it, I realised how unusual it was. 

  At the time, I'd only had my tape-measure 2M Yagi for a few weeks, and I was re-exploring two-metre SSB and CW -- because now I had an antenna that could work horizontally. I hadn't had a lot of luck, I was unsure if I was doing things right, and I didn't really know what to expect. Everything that I had done up to that point had been sheer experimentation. Obviously, I knew how to do a voice and CW CQ, how to use a clarifier and RF gain control to maximum advantage, and what the calling frequencies were. With a (marginal) horizontal beam, it seemed that I finally had a shot at "doing something". What I needed was a mentor. 

  My previous encounters with 'mentors' on this topic were quite disappointing. I had been told fabulous tales of decades past that promised amazing DX and high activity. I had been told that I would need at least 100W and stacked Yagis on a tower. I had been told that nobody used CW on 2M. I had been told that the 'real' hams were all on two-metre SSB rather than FM. 

  In short, it was a load of crap. 

  And so it was on one Sunday afternoon that I ran into KA0PQW on the HandiHam 145.450 repeater. Matt had allowed me to pick his brain on a wide range of topics previously, and I knew that he had operated VHF and UHF SSB in the past. It was not a difficult choice to prevail upon him once again. 

  Matt, as a person, is so completely unpretentious that you immediately feel comfortable asking his advice. At no point did he ever even position himself as an expert or a mentor. It was just two dudes talking, and one happened to know more about the subject than the other did. There was no condescension, no sales pitch, no "you should know this already" attitude. 

  The very first thing that he did was listen. It's hard for me to over-emphasise how rare this actually is in what passes for mentoring. I told him what I had been trying to do, what I had to work with, and what my results had been. 

  Next, he offered encouragement. He was (somewhat) impressed that I was trying CW, and he gave me credit for attempting this new exploration with such a marginal setup. Aside from my tape-measure three-element Yagi mounted on a tripod on my balcony, I have an FT-897D with 50W output on 2M. That's not a lot of power, nor is it a very good antenna. I knew this already. He didn't ridicule my rig. He didn't tell me that I would need to spend large sums of money. He didn't tell me that I "needed" to put up some kind of antenna that was incompatible with living in a condo. He accepted what I had to work with, and ran with it.

  Instead, he was realistic and honest -- another trait sorely lacking in most 'mentors'. With decent tropo conditions, I was told, I could maybe get a hundred miles with voice; possibly much further with CW. He had an immensely better setup, and he told me what that could do. But it was more by way of comparison than it was some kind of template for me to follow. Further, he told me that activity wasn't nearly at the same level that it was in past decades. There was potential, but little guarantee of results.  

  Even having said that, he offered to try a QSO, though it was long-shot for me to reach down to Ellendale. And this is another thing that so many so-called 'mentors' disdain; actually spending time in hands-on experimentation. As it was, I wasn't at home to give it a try, but he left a standing offer open. 

  Then he got down to actual, constructive advice. Instead of operating CW far down on the band-plan designated 144.07 frequency, he suggested that I try working adjacent to the 144.200 calling frequency. This would greatly improve my chances of making a contact, I was told. He also suggested trying to get into the weekly net, though it might be a challenge. This would give me a clearer idea of how far I could reach, and let me meet some of the local players in the scene. 

  We also talked a bit about UHF SSB, which is something that I've been intrigued by for years. With only 20W on my FT-897D, it was something that I hadn't been very confident in trying before. But his stories about the potential of the band and the mode were compelling. This is the next thing to try, though with my six-element Yagi set horizontally and working CW. Hey, what have I got to lose? 

  I had to close at this point, but Matt had completely changed my outlook of what was possible and worthwhile in my experiments with two-metre SSB and CW. He had done it so patiently, painlessly, and efficiently that it took me a while to realise how much information and encouragement I had actually absorbed. 

  And, of course, Matt was right about everything. Activity isn't very high. It's very much a hit-or-miss affair. Knowing that, I wasn't so disappointed when I didn't make a QSO. There's a lot that I can do with 50W. I won't reach Chicago, but my furthest two-metre QSO's have been on CW and SSB. And, moving up to 144.203 with CW actually did allow me to make contacts. Other people heard me on CW, then made contact with SSB. I even came close to making a QSO on UHF SSB. 

  Looking back, it was never what Matt did that made the difference, but what he didn't do. He gave me just enough insight for me to do it my way. He gave me just enough confidence to know that I was the right track. He made it clear that he was there if I needed more help. 

  He accomplished all of this without any kind of ego trip, step-by-step script, or counter-productive posturing. Never, at any point, did he even claim expertise -- though he had immense experience. 

  Anyone who imagines themselves to be an "Elmer" should learn from this experience. Listen. Put yourself in the other person's place. Give them the insight they need to approach the task. Offer your time. 

  The goal, after all, is not to have instant success. Rather, the goal is give the other person what it takes to have an adventure and find out if something is really as interesting as it seems from the outside. 

  As a mentor, the information you possess is probably the least important part of the equation. It's your ability to facilitate the learning process that is critical.

A more robust APRS network

  The major APRS gateway in the metro, W0YC-5, was down for about a week and only came back on-line recently. Over the past year or so, we've gained a few "receive-only" gateways in the metro that have turned out to be quite reliable: KE0NA-11, N0KFB, KB0HQD-10, KC0VRV and KB0GTF-1. In addition, the N0AGI gateway/digipeater in Prior Lake has become a powerful and indispensable part of the APRS backbone. It's hard for me to imagine how we ever got along without these machines. 

  The failure of W0YC-5 (previously W0YC-10) came at a bad time. Tropo was intense and packets from northern Minnesota, as well as neighbouring States, were flooding the local capacity. The local digipeaters only compounded this problem, tossing distant duplicate packets back and forth to overloaded gateways. Some local traffic ended up being gated by (similarly hammered) gateways in southern and northern parts of the state. 

  The local amateur community responded pretty well to this situation. Unnecessary traffic was voluntarily switched from RF to APRS-IS (internet), and a few part-time RX-only gateways jumped into the fray to fill some of the gaps: AE0EE-5, AE0RF-10, and KC0LDH. The more local operators that we get experimenting with RPi-based gateways, the more robust our local infrastructure becomes. The ability of these lower-coverage options to handle local traffic in their vicinity means that the squall of beacons from far-flung areas can be handled by the wider-coverage gateways. 

  In many respects, APRS is an anarchy in a world of tightly-controlled and co-ordinated amateur services. Any licensed ham can put up a digipeater or set up a beacon on what is basically a simplex frequency. Nobody decides if this is wise or even helpful. Nobody ensures that there are gateways capable of handling these packets. Nobody tells you that your beacon should operate every thirty minutes or every 60 seconds, or what the N-path should be. It's all up to the conscience and sense of community responsibility of the operators involved. You can use as much or as little of the shared community resources as you see fit. 

  It's all been surprising to me that such a system functions at all, much less so well.  

  Operating an RX-only gateway isn't as glamorous as operating a repeater, or even a digipeater. Of course, it's also not nearly as expensive nor complicated as those other options. Without something to actually gate those packets, there are no propagation maps, and the information contained in them is lost to those outside of the local RF coverage. Even then, it fades away into nothingness relatively quickly. 

  Our local system of a centralised gateway, supported by digipeaters on the fringes, has worked reasonably well. It works well enough that I can run a 5W HT into an exterior antenna, and get my packets gated reliably. It doesn't work well enough for me to exercise that option on a mobile basis as I drive around the metro, but I can use APRS-IS for that. 

  The problems arise, however, when that centralised gateway fails. 

We need a smaller-scale solution to provide backup in such a case. Raspberry Pi (RPi) RX-only gateways are inexpensive and require nothing more than a mobile whip to provide local coverage, along with the internet access that you already have. If we gained five more of these gateways, in strategic locations in the metro, we could easily handle the temporary loss of a major gateway. We need them near freeways, near digipeaters, and near beacons. They don't need to be sited on high towers. Clubs should be looking for volunteers to set them up in a member's home, a local library or school, or a fire station. Local coverage, not metro-wide coverage, is what is called for. Let the digipeaters bring the signal to your local area, and you just gate your local vicinity

  This is the way forward. It's not hard, it's not expensive, and it's not exclusive. Ask any of the local operators running these gateways for guidance, or look at the instructions provided by KC0VRV (Matt) to turn an old scanner or a BaoFeng into a receive-only gateway. You just set it up and let it do all of the work. It's less work than having a house-plant. Even if you only operate it when one of the major components of the infrastructure fail, you'll be making a contribution to the community.      

You Can't Give This Stuff Away

  I give away about $1000 each year to various amateur radio clubs, networks, and individuals in order to support the existing local infrastructure and future improvements. And there are individuals working on promising projects that could use the encouragement of a monthly check, even if it doesn't cover all of their costs. I send a monthly check to about a dozen of these groups and individuals.

  More and more, though, I'm finding it difficult for these individuals and organisations to actually take my money

  Most organisations prefer donations in plastic, such as PayPal. It can be fairly difficult to get the information needed to actually send them a paper check, and they seem reluctant to accept non-plastic donations. I had thought that a paper check would eliminate the built-in fees of electronic transactions, and get more money to the club or individual. Instead, a paper check is viewed as some kind of gigantic hassle that I'm spitefully inflicting on my fellow hams. 

  It's certainly easier for me to send a paper check using online banking once a month than it is to go to multiple sites and click "Donate", sign in to PayPal, and transfer money from my checking account to my credit card for each and every donation. Instead, I just enter the amounts into my banking site for each of my "victims", the money is automatically taken out, and the bank sends a paper check. Each check has my callsign and the word "donation" on it.

  The problem, apparently, is that the unfortunate recipient of this check has to deposit it or cash it. We live in an age, however, where you can deposit a check at any ATM or even deposit it at home using your smart-phone. 

  The other problem is that my bank has a policy of putting a "stop payment" on any check that isn't deposited after 90 days. More and more often, I'm getting messages from my bank that a donation I made three months ago is no longer valid because it hasn't been deposited. This turns into a gigantic hassle for me. I now have to contact the organisation and tell them not to deposit the check (and incur fees), send out a new check, and "verify" the address of the organisation on my banking site because my bank now believes the organisation doesn't exist. 

  I try to look at this situation from the perspective of the amateur radio club or network. Okay, their treasurer doesn't want to go to the bank every month to deposit ten or fifteen bucks. So I offer to send one check every three months. They don't even want to go the bank every three months to deposit what is now $30 or $45. I'm still getting notices about quarterly donations gathering dust until the bank calls time. 

  With this in mind, I had to ask AMSAT in advance if they would, in fact, accept a monthly paper check. I want to support the Fox Project and the amateur FM satellites, but it's easier for me to send $10 each month rather than $120 once. I almost had to apologise for this arrangement, but AMSAT graciously agreed to take my money. So far, there have been no problems with these checks sitting around. 

  We all hear clubs and organisations constantly reminding us that it costs money to provide the services that we take for granted. Maybe ten or twenty bucks each month really is a piddling sum, and they can't be bothered with it. Of course, if a few other people would donate that amount each month, maybe it would suddenly become worthwhile. 

  Some organisations, such as the Courage Center's HandiHam operation, are quite efficient about taking money and don't turn up their nose at small donations made by a paper check. Others seem bewildered, ask me what this is all about, and tell me that they accept donations via PayPal. 

  I imagine that, in many clubs, the office of "Treasurer" is not held by financial wizards and may even be more of an "honorary" position. Still, is a paper check now such an arcane article that a memo line stating "KD0TLS donation" is a daunting puzzle? Is depositing a check such an ordeal that a Treasurer groans in anguish at the prospect? 

  There are some organisations that really don't even want paper checks and aren't set up to handle them. They don't get my money, and they're probably pleased about that arrangement. I've approached local individuals about monthly donations, and been turned down. Fair enough. I'll still try to support clubs, networks, organisations, and individuals doing stellar work with my monthly donations. I'd rather support ten groups with $10 a month than one group with $100, because something on a regular basis is better than nothing. Isn't it?

                 

A Summer in The Bay; Observations

As my summer visiting the San Francisco, CA and Bay Area draws to a close, I want to share with you some of the observations and surprises that I have made and learned while visiting California.

All repeaters are not closed

Years ago I was warned by my elmer Reuben, WB0BWL that the style of open repeater operation that the east coast and midwestern states has was something to be appreciative of. Reuben warned me several times that western states - especially California - had a default of having closed-access, or members only amateur radio repeaters. If I were to ever visit California, I would need to pay to play before even thinking of keying up a local repeater. Additionally, I was warned of "all repeaters are closed, unless you get a personal invite" by former Californian and Minnesota transplant, Chris K9EQ.

This members only mentality might have been true in the 1970's but it's far from the reality of 2015. Today, the members-only repeaters are completely a myth. Not only are almost all repeaters that are listed in both Repeater book and ARRL's published book open, the closed systems invite you to try before you buy actively on the air, welcoming the infrequent newcomer. That said, closed systems make no illusions that they are open - it's explained clearly that it's a members-only system - and that I am welcome to become a member. Just send some money, and don't be a LID on the air.

Perhaps it's a sign of changing times for the hobby and society. There are fewer people that find talking on two-way radio or making a voice phone call appealing anymore. 

Jamming is not very common

I was also told that the activity level - especially jamming of repeaters - was off the hook in the area. I had enjoyed hours of listening to the iTunes internet stream of Los Angelos area repeaters just ten years ago. They were a non-stop soapbox of jamming, insults and verbal punching mixed with profanity. My summer observations are the opposite of that.

While there are more people here and more repeaters, jamming is really minimal in the Northern California / Bay Area. The closest thing to routine jamming happens on the Berkley 145.290 KB6LED repeater, by the repeater owner. He keys up and makes childish-sounding "what? what?" noises to stir up (poke at) a conversation on an otherwise dead system. I sometimes engage him in a short chat when I hear him try this poking at operators when the system has been dead for several hours. He sometimes uses this as a poke to get the one-hour rag-chewers with uninteresting conversations to get off the air.

I often listen to linked systems such as WIN and CARLA and never hear so much as heterodyne while two operators are rag chewing. Sure, the stogy Debbie-downers come on the repeater to tell the users that they are using some kind of scarce resource, but that happens all over the amateur bands.

For example, Todd recently blogged how that "scarcity" of "keying up too many amplifiers" nonsense made its way to our short conversation on DMR a week or so back. This happens on link systems in California,  D-Star systems in Dayton, Ohio and HF all over the world. I have heard the common drum of users getting on to ask D-Star users to "wrap up the rag chew" in Dayton, Ohio during Hamvention two years ago. Regularly I hear HF nets where check-in after check-in has to say "I don't want to hog the frequency, so back to net control," as if it's part of fitting into proper radio etiquette. So, the Debbie-downer syndrome of "don't use up all the airtime" stuff is not just a California thing. It's a user-enforced belief that there exists some sort of scarcity. And this nonsense happens everywhere in the hobby, not just in Northern California.

Downtown Intermod is non-existent

Most surprisingly, intermodulation issues in the major cities is non-existent. I have sampled San Fran, Palo Alto, Mountain View, San Jose and Oakland. I have a very cheap set of Baofeng portable radios that I carry with me that suffer badly in the Minneapolis, MN downtown from intermodulation / receiver collapse. That routine annoyance that plagues me at home in Minneapolis is not present here, despite my expectations to the contrary.

Being kicked off a repeater happens off the air

The cultural norms of the people of California drive the major differences in amateur radio operational style. Northern California is presently in a boom-economy, with software technology companies providing the strongest economic growth to what is an over-crowded city, county and state. The constant fight for basic resources drives daily attitudes. Anyone seen as "not open" or "closed to the flow of what is good for the community" are shunned. Being not open is seen as being closed. And closed is bad.

One example came up on the CARLA system a few months back. I overheard a routinely drunk, belligerent operator get the kindest asking to leave or being kicked off a repeater system I have ever heard. The owner of the system explained that the operators' on-air drinking was giving the link system a bad name, as well as the entire amateur radio community. The LID agreed with the control operator, and after a few back and forths signed off the air without a fight.

I didn't recognize that the same operator a few days later was back - because he was sober - and engaged in a short chat while driving over to the local grocery store. I later received a sarcastic and harsh-toned email from the repeater owner explaining how that ham was kicked off the system, and that I shouldn't talk to him. I got on the air to ask the repeater owner if I had committed an unforgivable sin, and he was hesitant to discuss my operation or the other operator. At no time did he even confirm that the other operator was kicked off the repeater system. Later, I received an email explaining that people banned from the system are only banned for a limited time, usually 30 days, and that banning is not discussed on the air.

The drive to appear "open" to everyone listening is so overwhelming that kicking someone off your repeater is done on the phone and via email instead of on the air. In Minnesota, we are just straightforward with people, being firm and clear on the air. And after receiving several emails on the topic, I decided that I was not consistently recognizing this banned operators voice and found it easier to stop using the linking system myself.

But this "openness" (in Minnesota we call it "wish-washy-ness") is not a failing of amateur radio specifically. It extends to the cultural norms of the area. In an employee-led job market, were employees can jump from employer to employer (and often do, the average stay of a software developer is 18 months), nobody ever wants to seem overly criticalharsh or heavy-handed when performing job reviews or explaining cultural norms. The mass-exit of employees could easily be blamed on a harshly worded misunderstanding by management. At my 90-day job review last week, I was given the full raise, with little explaining of my professional accomplishments (I had eight ready, my boss listened to two.) Additionally, if you make a mistake, there is a high tolerance for things not working out as expected, including downtime, as long as you learned something and can carry that knowledge forward during the next incident. In my professional experience in Minnesota, risk-assessments are done days in advance of any kind of deployment or upgrade and too-risky activities are stalled endlessly or cancelled all together.

Activity is about the same level, per capita, as Minnesota

California has many more people, and thus more amateur radio operators then Minnesota. I expected to have non-stop listening to rag chews and commuter traffic every day. Most traffic happens on machines that are south of San Francisco -- near San Jose, CA, and mostly on 440 MHz. I believe this is because the south bay has more of a suburban feel and more people in cars traveling up and down the peninsula. If I hear two or three separate conversations between 7:00pm and 9:00pm when driving through the South Bay, it's an amazing night. Most evenings 146, 220 and 440 MHz are completely dead. The weekly or monthly regularly scheduled emergency-service (ARES/RACES) net breaks the silence for about 30-45 minutes, and those are exceptionally boring to listen to.

Nobody in Downtown San Fran is on the air

Amateur radio activity in the heart of San Francisco is almost non-existent. I have had a number of people ask in person if I was carrying a ham radio when walking the city; but have only talked on-air with only two people that were within the city limits. The dense urban downtown office buildings block VHF and UHF communications so effectively that if you are in SOMA - the neighborhood South Of MArket where innovation and 30-something hipsters work - you might as well be inside a Faraday cage. The few repeaters that are located within downtown San Francisco provide excellent coverage within the downtown area, including CARLA's "System 2, N6MVT Repeater, San Francisco, beep."

Anyplace that 20-40 year olds with money work is a amateur radio dead zone of non-activity. The Mission neighborhood, where the Hipsters live, has excellent opportunity, although limited by the dense urbanness of housing and people, to work repeaters further south along the coast, as well as half-scale East Bay repeaters, such as Oakland.

Once you walk south of 10th street and Market, you can start to work Pacifica and Pacific Coast systems, including CARLA's "WB6JKV Repeater, System 32, Pacific Coast, beep." After I leave my office on Howard and 8th street and walk two blocks south, I have my pick of three good, five marginal CARLA repeaters, five DMR repeaters and a scattering of ten independent systems across the bay. The independent systems have virtually no traffic, and appear to serve the same purpose as backyard-hobby repeaters in Minnesota do (an ego boost to the repeater owner, and not much else.) The linked nature of CARLA and others provides more opportunity to have a happenstance meeting or conversation on the air, just as Todd has blogged about before. Stand-alone systems are a complete waste of energy even tossing out a call on.
